Mrs. Melanie Ford is a English and history teacher. She has been teaching for a total of 16 years and is currently teaching at Leverett’s Chapel for the junior high students.
Ford has taught at Kilgore College for a total of nine years, John Tyler for one year and at Leverett’s Chapel for six years. Ford says she much rather enjoys teaching at LC because “Its small and I know everybody, because the other places were to big, like John Tyler.” When I asked Ford what subject was her favorite to teach she answered “history because it’s just exciting to me.” Ford says teaching at the prison was kind of scary, “that’s why I left there and I got locked in there once on lockdown.” I asked Ford why she went from a college teaching level to a junior high teaching level, “I was a little bored with it because I taught at the college for nine years and I wanted to do something different. I wanted to shake things up a bit so I went to a prison then to John Tyler High School and then ended up here teaching at a junior high.” She says she got an award at Kilgore College for Outstanding Educator, “I got that award two of the nine years working there.” At Leverett’s Chapel Ford got awarded Teacher of the Year (07-08) and a cash bonus from the state for exemplary status of LC. Ford said every year she has a couple of students who amaze her. “Gifted students make me happy and also anyone who tries like crazy!”
“Does being a teacher affect the way you raise your children?” Ford answered “I guess so, yeah because it makes me more aware of the importance of school. If the girls have a slight headache I still make them go to school.” Ford says she doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon. “I’ll probably teach until I’m about 60.”
